Sarajevo

Sarajevo, different from all the cities in the world

Is there any city in the world that has caused a world war?  Yes.
Is there any city in the world that has 5 houses of 5 recognized religions? Yes.
Is there any city in the world, whose communist regime has organized Winter Olympics?  Yes.
Is there any city in the world where many people spend all their possessions for the benefit of the city? Yes.
Is there any city in the world where Muslims, Serbs and Croats saved a single Jewish book and were willing to die for it? Yes.
Is there any city in the world in which the Muslim authorities have allowed the construction of a factory of beer is 150 years ago? Yes.
Is there any city in the world from which you can go skiing for 20 minutes? Yes.

Some cities in the world can boast that they have something of this, but all together there is no other city except Sarajevo.

On 28.june 1914 Gavrilo Princip killed Sophia and her husband, the Archduke Franz Ferdinand of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
In Sarajevo between First and Second World War was 5 houses, of 5  World Religions. These were the mosques, Serbian Orthodox Church, the Roman Catholic church, Jewish synagogue and a Protestant evangelical church. Now here work four, because after the second war the new government confiscated evangelical church and it opened an art academy.
Adolf Hitler was planning to open a museum of "missing people" in Prague, and sent officers to take unique Jewish Haggadah from the museum in Sarajevo. Curator has lied to the officers that the book has already been taken away, and then urged partisans to carry. The curator is murdered, but the Haggadah was saved thanks to the curator Croat, Serb and a Muslim who took it in the mountain village. After the war ended four partisans went to fetch it into a museum where it is today. All four were of different faiths.
In the Moscow Summer Olympics was held. At that time Moscow was part of the communist Soviet Union. Only Winter Olympics held in the communist country was 1984. Then Sarajevo, which was within Yugoslavia, has successfully organized 14.Winter Olympics.
In 1521. in Sarajevo came Gazi Husrev-Bey. One of the richest men in that moment, he decided to stay in Sarajevo and spend all his money. From his wealth Sarajevo received:

  • Water supply length of 6 km, with wooden pipes;
  • Magnificent mosque;
  • Public toilets;
  • Libraries;
  • Medresa as today's college-level faculty;
  • Shopping center 109 m in length, so called Bezistan;
  • Hotel for horses and traders, caravan seraglio, where people call Morića han;
  • Turkish bath;
  • Clock tower;
  • Hanikan as the seat of knowledge and professorial club;
  • Many small buildings for the poor as a public kitchen
Above all this, Husrev gave loans to over 4,000 citizens of Sarajevo to start a business. The loans were for 10 years without interest.
Later, throughout history many have followed the path Husrev-Bey, and set up a foundation and donated building his fortune.
Sarajevo got 1864. beer factory, and it is interesting that the Turks ruled over Bosnia till 1878. The Turcs gave permission. Perhaps it is important to note that Sarajevo had Court in 16. century, composed of courts of all four denominations. Muslims was the president of the court, but never having made a decision if he had the consent of at least two more members of the panel. There are a lot of other unique stories about Sarajevo, but I leave you with some of them to find themselves.

Welcome and stay here, in one city on the mountain.
If you see a welcoming open palm, with a stone statue somewhere in front of the museum, or a meadow, remember that this is a great-grandfather of the inhabitants of Sarajevo, which says, "In my hand the sun is shining and I have a friendship and love for all good men."

"Do not trample on my eternal home because I was what you now and you are not yet as I am now." So ordered by unknown Bogumil, good Bošnjanin to write on his grave. Carved in stone, and today describes our ancestors and their perspectives on life.

Generations come and go, and this country is alive. In its center was Sarajevo. Like a phoenix is born after the flood, disease and wars, and the more soberly. Sarajevo as the Bosnian carpets, woven of beautiful and strange colors. Strange to those who do not know human nature, defiance and sabur (patience, in Bosnian). Nice open arms those who accept all well-meaning visitors, no matter if you stay a day or a lifetime. Bogumils are still engraved in stone 13. century message "Out of my hand the sun is shining, I have friendship and love for all good men", are located in Sarajevo and spite for those who think they can rule this town.

There are bread for the hungry and those who believe. In 13. century settled Franciscans left side of the Miljacka, a right-Orthodox. Between them they lived Bogomils. Tired of the constant efforts of neighbors to the west and neighbors to the east, undertook a new religion, Islam.

In 1463 Sarajevo lived and helped each other three world famous believers of religion. With the arrival of Jews in early 16. century that number has risen to four, during the reign of Austro-Hungarian joined them and the Protestant Evangelists.

During those early years in Sarajevo in 20.century five religions have their own facilities, stable society and community. In Sarajevo, the First World War, and for the second time in the vicinity of Sarajevo have played the most important battle against the fascists.

Because people and beauty of the mountains around Sarajevo entrusted with the organization 14. Winter Olympics.
Today, Sarajevo is similar to the great cities of the world but still different and their own. The legend says: "Who is a drink of water with Baščaršija again will want to come to this city."

Welcome to the city that connects the east and west, and who admire the north and south. Sarajevo is not just a city, Sarajevo is the soul of the home. Home for good people, for those souls who have lost theirs, a giant invincible to all enemies and those who do not want to find my soul and peace.
