Sarajevo has historically been a hub of many different religions and ethnic groups. The city is rich in museums: the Museum of Sarajevo, the Ars Aevi Museum of Art, National Museum, the Historical Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Olympic Museum, Brusa bezistan Museum of Sarajevo 1878th-1918th, the Jewish Museum and the Museum of BiH literature and theatrical art of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Galleries Sarajevo are: National Gallery, Cinema City, Mak, R. Petrovic, 10m 2, new temple, the Studio Collection Safet Zec, Gallery Mersad 'E & A', Palette Gallery, St Anto, Boris Smoje, Small Gallery, Gallery Kicoš etc. . The city is also situated in the National Theatre, founded in 1919, and the Chamber Theatre 55, Youth Theatre and the Club Restaurant. Other cultural institutions include the cultural center of Sarajevo, the Sarajevo Library, Art Gallery of Bosnia and Herzegovina and Bosnian Institute.

War damage, [13] and reconstruction of destroyed numerous cultural and religious objects, such as Gazi Husrefbeg Library, National Library, the Oriental Institute Museum and the Olympic Games in 1984, led to the enactment of laws on protection of culture and cultural institutions.

Sarajevo is a city of many famous poets and thinkers. Nobel laureate Ivo Andric, is a part of his life in Sarajevo, as well as poets and writers Silvia Strahimir Kranjčević, Isak Samokovlija, Mak Dizdar, Dusko Trifunovic, artists Mersad Berber, Safet Zec, and Oscar-winning film director Danis Tanovic. Nobel Prize for Chemistry Vladimir Prelog was born in Sarajevo, as well as directors Jasmila Zbanic, Benjamin Filipovic, Pierre Zalica, Ademir Kenović and Emir Kusturica.

Sarajevo Film Festival, launched in 1995, has become the premier film festival in the Balkans. Sarajevo Winter, Sarajevo Jazz festival known as Baščaršijske and night, summer cultural, musical and dance event.

Sarajevo music scene has developed in the town between 1961 and 1991. This kind of music began with groups like the Index, the White Button and singer-songwriter Jadranka Stojakovic and Kemal Montena. Continued in 1980, with SCH, Orchestra Blue, smoking, Valentino and red apples. After the war, the Irish rock group U2 was the first foreign group who held a concert in the city.
